Words at your level
Recommendations follow your level and goals, with controls for difficulty and the kind of words you want to see.
A vocabulary builder for advanced English
WordShine is for people who already speak English and want it sharper. Words chosen around your level, real sentences, and practice that brings them back before you forget.
On Google Play for Android. An iPhone version is coming soon. Free to start.
How it works
The gap that matters is between recognising a word and being able to reach for it. WordShine is built around that gap.
A short adaptive test estimates where your vocabulary sits within WordShine’s library. Your feed then shows words at the edge of what you know, not beginner lists.
Every word comes with a real sentence, how it’s used, where it comes from and a memory trick where one exists. Hear it said aloud, with a hint in your own language alongside.
Words you start learning come back as you’re about to forget them, through varied practice. Then use them in your own sentences and spot them in your reading.
What’s inside
Discovery, recall, reading and use, connected, so a word you meet in the feed can turn up in a short read, in a practice round and in a sentence you write.
Recommendations follow your level and goals, with controls for difficulty and the kind of words you want to see.
Scheduled review that responds to how well you recalled each word, so effort goes where it’s needed.
Today’s session takes 2, 5 or 10 minutes: words you’re about to forget, a pair you mix up, a word in a new sentence. Back after a break? It starts small.
Original short pieces on psychology, history, science and business with your words inside, plus the stories behind words.
Slang, acronyms, formal-versus-casual pairs and British-versus-American words, kept apart from your vocabulary score, with a verdict on whether you’d say it at work.
Paste a passage, share an article or photograph a page to find the words you probably don’t know. Scanning happens on your phone.
Select a word in any app and choose WordShine to see its meaning without leaving what you’re reading.
A word-of-the-day widget is free. Premium adds memory checks you answer without opening the app, and an optional lock-screen word.
Optional hints in nine languages: Spanish, Portuguese, French, Arabic, Hindi, Urdu, Indonesian, Turkish and Vietnamese.
Look inside
A page set for reading words: serif for the words, soft shapes, one thing to do at a time. In dark or light, to match your phone.
Private by design
There’s no account to make and nothing to sync. We never receive the words you learn, look up or write.
Free & Premium
Reviews and every word you’ve learned stay free, always. Premium opens up more learning, more content and more tools.
Enough to build a real habit.
More of everything, still offline.
Pay the way you like. Choose a yearly or monthly subscription, each with a free trial for new subscribers, or Lifetime: one payment, no renewals, for as long as WordShine is offered.
Prices and trial lengths are shown in Google Play and in the app before you buy, in your own currency. Subscriptions renew until you cancel, in the app (Settings → Premium) or in Google Play. Exact free limits are shown in the app and may change.
Questions
It’s built for upper-intermediate and advanced learners, people who already speak English and want a more precise, expressive vocabulary for work, reading, writing or exams. If you’re just starting English, it will feel too hard.
Core learning does. A connection is needed for purchases, for the optional usage and crash reports if you agree to them, and for voice checks, because your phone’s speech service may work online. Scanning uses a text model delivered by Google Play services the first time.
No. Sentences, notes and scanned text stay on your phone. Optional reports never include what you learn or write. If you use voice checks, your phone’s own speech-recognition service handles the audio, under its own privacy policy.
Yes. You get a daily session, a continuing review routine, and samples of the content and tools. Words you’ve started learning stay reviewable on the free plan.
Nothing is deleted. Your words, progress and notes wait for you, and the Premium-only parts lock until you return. You can keep reviewing the words you’ve learned.
Export a copy in Settings and import it on the new phone. Android’s own device backup may also carry your progress across. There’s no WordShine account, so nothing syncs by itself.
WordShine supports vocabulary practice that’s relevant to exams such as IELTS and GRE. It can’t promise a score or a level of English.
No. It’s an adaptive estimate within WordShine’s own library of words, not a recognised language qualification.
An iPhone version is coming soon. For now, WordShine is on Google Play for Android phones.
